In July 1985, the Eritreans liberated the major town Barentu that is surrounded by rocky mountains.
Barentu was one of the four towns that the Ethiopians had managed to defend in 1977 when almost all Eritrean towns were liberated.
Here, 7700 Ethiopian soldiers were put out of action and a large number of munitions, tanks and artillery pieces were captured. This increased the firepower of the Eritreans that was evident in later military engagements.
